6th Sunday of Easter
How well do we love Jesus Christ? Or is our first love someone or something else? If we really love Jesus Christ we will invite Him into every part of our life. We will desire to follow the word of God, out of love. I once wrote a story about Jesus inviting me to visit His home. It reflected on many parts of my life. Where Jesus wanted me to give up and pick up. It really helped me refocus on Christ.
We are now entering the month of May. which is traditionally known as a month for Mary. We will be crowning Mary at the close of the 10:00 am Mass. I have always held Mary up in my spiritual life. That ‘Mother’ role that she can take on for all of us. I have found since my own mothers passing 5 years ago (May 13th), that I have grown even closer to Mary. It is as if Mary had said to me, I am still your mother. I have a 29″ statue of Mary, that I have had for about 18 years now. It will always hold a place of Honor in my rectory.
Next weekend is ‘Mother’s Day’, a day that we remember to honor our Mothers. Be they our birth mother, our adopted mother, or even someone who is like a mother to us. Why not remember Mary our mother? How will you honor your mother next week?
Also next weekend we will be celebrating “The Ascension of the Lord”. This Solemnity (highest feast) falls on Thursday May 5th, however, our local Church is one of many who transfer it to the following Sunday. May is a busy time in our Local Church. The first Saturday in May is the ordination of the transitional Deacons, those who will be ordained priest next year. On May 13th, Archbishop Hebda will be installed as Archbishop of St Paul and Minneapolis. And the Last Saturday of May is always the Ordination to the Priesthood.
I enjoy these large liturgies because they bring us together as a local Church and always brings together a large group of priest. I also run into many people I know from former parishes. If you have never been to one of these large liturgies, I would encourage you to consider going. It can be a wonderful experience. Archbishop Hebda’s installation will be broadcast on EWTN and on Relevant Radio. One of the local cable channels will also broadcast the priesthood ordinations (sorry, I do not know what one)
May this May be a renewing of your mind and heart. May Mary your Mother be watching over you.
Blessings,
Fr Backer
